If you are thinking about learning the art of Nunchucks, then there are some things which you must know before. Nunchucks are weapons but to be specific they are martial arts weapons as they are used by them mostly.

The most common martial art that uses Nunchucks is Karate and martial artists from all over the world use this weapon extensively but there is no doubt that it is mostly famous in Japan from where it finds its origins but some people say that it was a Chinese ruler who designed and constructed this weapon in real for the first time. He was the last emperor of the Sung Dynasty and was of Chinese descent.

The story says that a Mongolian emperor took over the estate of this emperor and that is why the Chinese emperor fled with his soldiers and took refuge in a nearby village. There they lived in peace but all the emperor wanted was to get his estate back and one day when he was out having a walk in the fields, he had a plan. His eyes fell upon the tool that the farmers were using to farm and he had a sudden idea.

He took one of those tools and went back to the place where he was staying. He stayed locked up for days and designed a weapon similar to the tool. It was the first Nunchaku ever created and was longer in length than the ones we find today in markets.

Tricks were devised to use this weapon which the emperor taught to his soldiers and soon they attained victory against the Mongolian emperor and got their estate back by fighting with Nunchucks with the Mongolian army.

Is Nunchucks an Optimal Weapon to Use?

Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. And when it is, that is when you are fully trained to use it otherwise you will bring more harm to yourself than to anyone else. You can use a situation to fight and to combat against someone but only when you know how to.

This weapon can be used in almost all close-quarter combative situations but you have to be careful not to hit yourself and there is one more thing which you must be sure of and that is to confirm that carrying and using Nunchucks is legal in your state or area. If it is legal then it is fine but if it is illegal, then you can face serious criminal charges from the police of your state.

When it comes to training, then if you are a beginner it may take you almost three months to get equipped with the weapon but if you already know how to use the weapon, then it will take slightly less time to be a pro at the art of Nunchaku. But to be a master, you will need years of continuous practice along with sheer determination and will.

Also, note that Nunchucks can only be used in the close-quarter fight with your opponent and if he/she has a gun and is at a distance from you, then Nunchucks is not a good choice. But if you still plan to use Nunchaku as your weapon of choice in such a situation, then you better be a Nunchaku master and should have smart and quick reflexes.

Nunchucks are small weapons and they are light in weight as well. It is very easy to carry them around with you. They also require almost no maintenance as you other weapons i.e. guns and knives do.

The best thing about them is that they are quite cheap to buy. However, they are pretty useless to you if you do not know how to use them. There are some weapons which we can use without training or prior use but there are some weapons i.e. Nunchucks which cannot be used without training.

Many people think that these weapons are all about blocking and striking but it is not entirely true. Nunchucks can be used to choke your opponent or perform some joint lock tricks which mostly come under the umbrella of Jiu Jitsu. There are many martial arts other than just Karate which use Nunchaku. Some of these arts are Nunchakudo and Kobudo.

But there is no doubt in the fact that these weapons go really well with Karate. You perform a smart move, reach your opponent, hit him with Nunchaku and come back to your original position and keep on maintaining your distance from your opponent so he cannot hit you back. So, if you want to get started with Nunchucks, here are a few tips.

Tips on Using Nunchucks 1- Buy Nunchucks

The first step is of course to buy Nunchucks. If you are buying for training purposes, then go for foam Nunchaku or wooden ones. Your first priority should be foam Nunchaku as they are quite safe and they won’t harm you, unlike wooden and metal Nunchucks which will severely hurt you if you get hit by them during training.

Foam Nunchucks are legal everywhere as well as they are not generally considered to be weapons or are considered fake weapons. They are durable as well and are quite much cheaper than wooden or metal Nunchaku.

2- Training Space

You must train in an empty room where no one else is available. It is for other people’s safety as you will be just a novice and anything can go wrong. Also, it is very likely that you won’t be able to pull off Nunchaku tricks at first and continuous failure in front of someone else will make you lose confidence. Therefore, it is better to practice alone for safety and high spirits.

3- Start Slow

It is better to start slow and not try to pick pace too fast. Also, only practice the most basic techniques first and then go for the complex ones. Practicing basic moves first will get you well equipped with the fundamentals and then you will be able to learn the complex ones quickly.

When you feel confident that you have mastered the basic techniques, then you can move to the more complex ones and start practicing them. But in the beginning, only focus on the basic tricks and techniques.

4- Wooden Nunchucks

Just when you think that you are not efficient enough and know your way around Nunchaku, then you can quit using foam Nunchucks and start using wooden Nunchucks. They will be heavier and will give you an insight into the real Nunchaku. Once you get equipped with wooden Nunchucks, metal Nunchucks won’t be difficult to use as well.
