How to Pull off Balisong Knife Tricks as a Beginner
It can be intimidating as a rookie to make your mark in the world of balisong knife tricksters. Just like any other sport, balisong knife tricks have a beginner, intermediate and advanced level.
For beginners, it is advisable to never use a real balisong but rather a butterfly knife trainer. This will prevent any unwanted cuts and injuries and give you a smooth ride up the ladder of difficulty in the dominion of balisong knife tricks.
We want to dispel the rumor that is that you need to start flipping with a live blade because that simply isn’t true. You do need to respect whatever knife you’re using as though it is a real balisong. There’s no reason to hurt yourself while you’re still learning.
If you only have access to a real balisong then you can add electrical tape to turn it into a butterfly knife trainer temporarily. The real key to training like this is to treat your trainer as though it was a real knife that means keeping track of the bite handle and starting over if you accidentally cut yourself.
Perfect Beginner Balisong Knife Trick
You should learn this trick as a beginner because this trick is a standard opening for all advanced balisong knife tricks.
Most advanced level balisong knife tricks use combos-a combination of beginner level tricks joined together to carry out a complicated maneuver.
The trick is called a Zen rollover. This is an awesome trick that loops forever and teaches you some great concepts and it’s really satisfying and fun as a beginner balisong enthusiast.
First, you want to grip the bite handle and the way you do this is using your thumb and first finger then from that point on, you want to let the safe handle swing freely around your thumb.
You can catch the safe handle with your middle finger and thumb afterwards and it’s okay at first if you drop. It’s more about getting the balisong to do the action of going around your thumb then it is about catching the balisong properly.
Since you are a beginner, you are just going to let the handle swing around our thumb and once you’ve done that you’re going to catch the handle as it comes around between your middle finger and thumb.
Now hold the balisong with the bite handle and let it swing around and catch it with your middle finger and thumb as it comes around and you will see what’s called the wrist pass.
All you do is as the knife is swinging, turn your wrist over the balisong. As you are turning your wrist the knife swings which makes it possible for you to avoid the blade touching your fingers and so if you were to accidentally start with the wrong handle and you caught the bite handle, the wrist pass would keep the knife from cutting you. This is a pro balisong tip: doing a wrist pass keeps the balisong from cutting your fingers.
Once you’ve done the wrist pass, you should throw the knife around your first finger again and again. Just do this as many times as it takes to get the balisong around your finger. Then you’re going to be catching it with your first finger and thumb after a minute pinching motion.
Now you’re just going to take the safe handle of balisong and throw it over your first finger and once you’ve thrown it over your first finger, you will catch it with your thumb and first finger.
Once you’ve gotten the catch down it’s actually really easy from this point onwards. If you’re using a real balisong, when you’re catching the knife you will be catching it on the blade side which is the bite hand so you want to be careful not to have your fingers in the way when you close the balisong or you can get hurt.
Now, you’re in the perfect spot because all you have to do is turn your hand over and you’re ready to start again.
You’re back in the starting position and you throw the balisong over again, catch it between your middle finger and your thumb, then throw it over your first finger again and catch it between your first finger and your thumb. Turn your hand over so you can just do this forever with your balisong.
That’s it. You have just pulled over your first balisong trick. This trick will help in your journey towards more advanced tricks. Practice it regularly with your balisong and you are good to go!
